About 10 years ago, when I created my first website, I found that adding a free contest giveaway, would get me a good amount of traffic. Whether or not it got me targeted traffic is another question, but I did get a few jobs from traffic that came for me free baby plaque or step stool. As google changed the way it ranked blogs, and free stuff sites became less prevalent on the web, this marketing technique became less popular.
Today I stumbled across this post with made me immediately put contests on my blogs. Whether or not the contest traffic brings someone who will complete a sale with me, there is a good chance that they will click on one of the ads on my page... Read the post. Giveaway something. Get traffic. You might like it.

I have been thinking about doing some contests on my blog(s)...mainly the www.mysnellvilleblog.com one, because I think it would be a good fit. I could ask Snellville businesses to donate the prizes.
But for people who create custom items, (like my portraits) it's not a good idea to have a contest to win a free pencil portrait, because then people who might have ordered will wait to see if they win. By waiting to see if they win, then the sense of urgency to order is lost.
So business owners should think long and hard about what they are offering and how they are offering it. Also, there are laws regarding contests and sweepstakes, so it's important to check to make sure you aren't running an illegal promotion.
I wasn't able to get the link to open up, so I'm not sure if the article covers that point. I'll try to read it later.
Good points Darla... John Chow, a highly successful blogger gets sponsored gifts and also regifts things he can't use.
For my homeschool blogs, I am giving away curriculum that I purchased and never used... that will hold me for a while!
Hey, glad you liked my article on blog contests!
